On June 12 more than 70 renowned internet professionals, including legendary celebrities, signed an open letter to the President of the European Parliament, arguing against unreasonably invasive measures contemplated by the European Union (EU) against internet providers and users.

"As a group of the Internet’s original architects and pioneers and their successors, we write to you as a matter of urgency about an imminent threat to the future of this global network," begins the open letter, published by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The threat is a new provision, Article 13, that requires internet platforms to automatically filter uploaded content. BBC News explains that, according to Article 13, every online platform that allows users to post text, sounds, code or images will need some form of content-recognition system to review all material that users upload.
